France to introduce 1,000 extra speed cameras by 2012

Following a 20% rise in road fatalities in January 2011, the French government has announced an extra 1,000 speed cameras by 2012, including 400 this year. 100 average speed systems are also included.

The new plans include 90 of the latest generation fixed camera systems that can tell the difference between trucks and smaller vehicles. At the present time in France, camera pictures with a lorry and a car in the same shot are rejected.

Mobile units will also be increased as well as mobile Gendarme car and motorcycle units.
